  • NDP LEADER THOMAS MULCAIR

A portrait of Thomas Mulcair with an un-conservative design. Pun intended. Mr. Mulcair was open and generous with his time. The necessity of keeping my journalism impartial stops me from commenting further.

  • SURVIVOR, C.A.R.

Although this photogrph of a man in the Central African Republic who narrowly escaped a lynch mob isn't really a portrait in my understanding of the term, the simplicity of form, white sky background, and the disturbing effect of it being among these other, primarily manufactured pictures pictures, makes it an interesting presence. His physical wounds were superficial, but we can only imagine the depths of his stress trauma.

  • JACK

Jack grew a beard and I wanted to take his picture. It was OK with a red wall as a background, but then it dawned on me that the rural-retro nature of the "timber" hair style would meld with the current renaissance of the tintype.

  • CELINE DION applies makeup.

I was working with my friend Heidi Hollinger on a shoot with Celine Dion and children who had survived various traumas. At one point Celine was in a mermaid outfit. This is obviously a "between takes" moment, but I like the grand gesture and the way it rises up in the frame, against the rather mundane act of putting on makeup. That's sort of how Celine is in many ways: epic yet banal.

I think Mike was abducted by aliens, as he simply disappeared one day.

I never tire of the miracle of light shaping the human face, how it molds, transforms, and infuses each portrait with qualities that light carries. Yes.
